Enjoy Affordable Luxury With the Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Positioned as a smaller, more affordable version of the popular S-Class, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class starts at just over $48,000.[a] That's less than half as much of even the entry-level S-Class, giving drivers a stylish, athletic alternative that won't break the bank. The C-Class has certainly been met with plenty of enthusiasm from the Mercedes faithful. In fact, the C-Class is the best-selling Mercedes sedan and has routinely outshined the rest of the lineup with the exception of the brand's GLC- and GLE-Class SUVs.

"The letters C and S sit at opposite ends of the alphabet. However, in our portfolio, they're now moving closer together," says Ola Källenius, CEO of Daimler AG & Mercedes-Benz AG. The C-Class has been a major driver of Mercedes' sales since the early 1990s, and that's not a trend that looks to be slowing with the fifth-generation model that hit the market in 2021. "The C-Class is already our best-selling sedan. Still, I'm certain our new C-Class will excite even more customers with a wide range of high-tech features derived from our flagship S-Class." So what's so special about the sporty compact that could? What advancements does the fifth-generation C-Class have to offer, and is it worth a trip to check out a used Mercedes-Benz for sale near West Chester? We'll explore all that and more as we take a closer look at one of Mercedes' most well-rounded offerings.

Performance

The most notable upgrade when it comes to the fifth-generation C-Class would have to be the engine. Don't get us wrong: there was nothing to complain about when it came to the fourth-generation model's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that churned out 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, but the newer model leverages some exciting new technology that'll have you cruising into Philly or Wilmington for your dinner reservation with time to spare. Mercedes has embraced the hybrid approach with an integrated 15-kW electric motor and 48-volt hybrid system that serves as the perfect complement to the C-Class' turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The new setup delivers the same 255 hp as the previous generation, but that all changes when the electric motor kicks into action and delivers an extra 20 hp.

The hybrid approach proves even more fruitful in terms of torque. The fourth-generation C-Class topped out at 273 lb-ft, but the new version ups that number by some 20 to deliver an ample 295 lb-ft of torque. That should be more than enough for some thrilling acceleration, but just wait until the electric motor kicks into action. The hybrid design allows the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine to generate an extra 148 lb-ft of boost for a short period, upping the compact's performance resume by a considerable margin. Add it all up, and you've got a sub-$50,000 luxury sports sedan that can speed from zero to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds.[a]

A nine-speed automatic comes standard, and while some purists might gripe about a lack of control, it's all part of a wider effort that has seen the manual option completely phased out of the Mercedes lineup for the 2023 model year. The standard paddle shifters should go a long way towards placating those who prefer to row their own gears, but the responsive automatic also does fine all on its own. Delivering plenty of torque with minimal lag, the C-Class provides an exceptionally fun ride that belies its low starting price.

The Intuitive MBUX Infotainment System

First introduced in the 2018 A-Class, the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) has won some rave reviews in its short time on the market. Named the industry's second-based infotainment system by Autolist, MBUX is a feature-packed platform that is both well-designed and easy to use. Noted for its modern, intuitive user interface, C-Class drivers can interact with the MBUX system through the sedan's 11.9-inch vertically oriented touchscreen display.

A touchscreen might offer a lot in the way of convenience and customization, but it can also have its drawbacks. Many drivers pine for the buttons and knobs of old, but Mercedes has engineered around this modern lack of tactile controls through the use of haptic feedback. Familiar to anyone who's ever interacted with a smartphone, haptic feedback has been lauded for delivering a more satisfying, responsive interaction with a flat surface like the MBUX display.

But the pleasantly tactical touchscreen display isn't the only way to interact with the MBUX system, with a voice-activated digital assistant providing an even more convenient hands-free option. The MBUX digital assistant is one of the industry's most responsive and capable contenders and also happens to be one of the smartest. Mercedes has designed the voice-activated assistant with built-in AI functionality that gives drivers a bespoke digital experience by learning about their preferred settings and preferences over time. From remembering your favorite drive-time radio station and phone contacts to logging your most-visited destinations, the digital assistant creates a closer bond between driver and vehicle every time you step behind the wheel.

Mercedes has also made some important improvements as it continues to perfect the MBUX system. While previous versions limited the amount of information that drivers could view at any one time, Mercedes has shifted to a more comprehensive tab-based approach that makes it easy to quickly shift between different apps and settings. Often-used features like GPS navigation will ensure clear, concise directions for your next outing to Stroud Preserve and are a permanent fixture of the home screen with a convenient icon and search box that lets drivers punch in their destination without having to do any obnoxious menu searching.

A Wide Range of Infotainment, Connectivity, and Safety Tech

While MBUX might serve as the command center for much of the C-Class' in-vehicle technology, it's just a small part of the equation. In addition to being treated to one of the industry's best infotainment systems, C-Class drivers will also enjoy a full slate of safety, entertainment, and convenience tech. We'll start with the usual suspects, including a wireless charging pad, ambient lighting system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, which are clever connectivity features that allow drivers to leverage the digital expertise of the two leading names in the modern smartphone segment.

Whether you're sending and receiving texts and accessing turn-by-turn GPS directions thanks to apps like Google Maps and Waze, streaming your favorite tunes or podcasts from Spotify and Audible, or catching up on the score from the latest Phillies game, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto essentially turn the C-Class' infotainment system into an extension of your smartphone.

Then, there are the features that distinguish the C-Class as a true luxury model. A Wi-Fi hotspot ensures you're always online and can come in handy when trying to keep younger riders occupied on long journeys. The sedan's 12.3-inch digital gauge display and heads-up display add a little taste of futurism to the dashboard, but it's the C-Class' fingerprint sensor that represents its most novel feature. Simply touch the sensor, and the C-Class will instantly load the user's unique driver profile. From seating and comfort settings to your preferred radio stations and apps, these drivers' profiles mean you'll be met with a customized interior every time you step behind the wheel, no matter how many drivers might share the vehicle.

An optional Burmester 3D surround sound system provides a listening experience that any audiophile is sure to appreciate. With 15 speakers and 710 watts of power, the Burmester system delivers an immersive surround sound experience that'll make you feel like you're taking in a live show at the Uptown Knauer Performing Arts Center. The Burmester array can even be tuned to a driver's specific musical taste with a personalization function that's sure to hit all the right notes.

Entertainment and convenience tech might get all the attention, but there's no discounting the C-Class' long list of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Adaptive Cruise Control gives drivers the chance to sit back, relax, and let the car handle all the throttle and braking duties when you're cruising down the West Chester Pike. This function isn't rare in today's market, but Mercedes' system elevates Adaptive Cruise Control to another level by referencing navigation data to help adjust the speed in anticipation of upcoming curves and roundabouts.

Active Brake Assist, Active Lane-Keeping Assist, and Active Lane-Change Assist round out the C-Class' roster of ADAS and make it easy to see why the sedan has earned stellar safety ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class might be one of the brand's more economical models, but that doesn't mean it's lacking in luxury features. The new fifth-generation model represents a dramatic improvement over the previous version when it comes to performance, thanks in large part to the sedan's new hybrid powertrain. The increase in torque is particularly impressive, offering drivers the chance to inject a little excitement into their daily drive as they hit the throttle and enjoy the sort of acceleration that only a sports sedan can provide.

The C-Class' MBUX infotainment system is one of its most distinguishing features, enabling the sort of class and customization that you won't find on your run-of-the-mill sedan. The Wi-Fi hotspot, Burmester 3D surround sound system, and generous complement of ADAS make the C-Class cabin an opulent home away from home, no matter where the road might take you.
