The idea of all-wheel drive in a Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicle started over 100 years ago, when Paul Daimler first brainstormed about an AWD automobile. That was 1903, and in 2021, Mercedes-Benz continues to lead the way in intelligent all-wheel drive with 4MATIC® technology. More important than ever in Lancaster's dynamic weather conditions, 4MATIC® All-Wheel Drive sets the standard for safety and innovation.
How does 4MATIC® work? Through a center differential, the 4MATIC® system automatically sends power to all four wheels on your vehicle. When driving other vehicles, you can often tell that an all-wheel drive system is engaged. Mercedes-Benz has designed the 4MATIC® system so that the driver doesn't notice when it's working, sending the engine's torque evenly to each wheel.
4MATIC® works for the driver in all different situations. Your car's weight shifts forward when you brake, and 4MATIC® responds appropriately. Acceleration sends weight to the rear wheels, and 4MATIC® is there to make sure the torque is sent where it's needed.
Many of our customers love 4MATIC® for its added safety. Much of the safety innovations for 4MATIC® come from its software, which has continuously improved over the years. The Mercedes-Benz 4-wheel Electronic Traction System, Electronic Stability Program, and anti-lock brakes work in concert with 4MATIC® to keep you safe on all road conditions, whether it be rain, sleet, or snow.
