If you're considering buying a Mercedes-Benz, you may have come across the terms "AMG" and "AMG-Line." But what do these terms mean? Here at Mercedes-Benz of Lancaster, we're here to give you a quick overview of the difference between AMG and AMG-Line models.

What is AMG?

AMG stands for “Aufrecht, Melcher, and Großaspach,” the German town where AMG was founded. AMG is Mercedes Benz's in-house performance division, responsible for developing high-performance versions of Mercedes Benz cars.

AMG started out as a separate company in 1967, focused on developing high-performance versions of existing Mercedes-Benz models. In 1999, AMG became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG, and today the AMG brand is synonymous with top-of-the-line performance.

In 1993, Daimler Benz and AMG entered into a cooperation agreement which resulted in the development of the first jointly produced car - the Mercedes-Benz AMG C36. This was also the first "official" AMG line. Many other successful models have been released since then, cementing AMG's reputation as a manufacturer of high-quality, performance-oriented vehicles.

When it comes to high-performance vehicles, there is only one name that you need to know: AMG. AMG models are renowned for their hand-crafted engines, which are only manufactured in Affalterbach, Germany. Vehicles equipped with AMG engines offer increased horsepower like nobody else. They provide drivers with a sense of power that is simply unmatched.

The 2021 AMG GT Black series, for example, produces an astonishing 720 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. That's enough to propel the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and 0 to 200 km/h in under 9 seconds But the truth of the matter is that the AMG engine is not meant for an average driver, like who would want to reach the speed of 160+ mph while cruising around the city? But does that mean you shouldn't be allowed to enjoy the look of a sports car? We don't think so!

AMG vs. AMG-Line – The Difference

AMG-Line is a styling package that can be added to nearly any Mercedes model. This package gives the vehicle an AMG-inspired look without the high-performance engine. So, if you want the sporty look of an AMG car, AMG-Line may be the right choice for you.

Simply put: some Mercedes-Benz vehicles can be upgraded with "AMG-Line" styling, while an actual AMG vehicle is a much larger upgrade. So, for example, you can purchase several different models of GLC SUV; you can either buy Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 SUV with (or without) AMG-Line upgrades or a Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 SUV with a more finely-tuned engine and other upgrades.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG-line trim adds a sporty and luxurious edge to the vehicles in the Mercedes line-up. On the outside, you'll find unique styling elements like chrome accents and 18-inch or 19-inch AMG alloy wheels. Inside, the AMG-line features sport seats, a sport steering wheel, aluminum pedals, and AMG Floor Mats. You also get upgraded suspension for enhanced handling and precision and brakes. Whether you're looking for a little extra style or performance, the Mercedes-Benz AMG-line has you covered.
