Mercedes-Benz Develops Active Seabelt Buckles

Feel like you're always digging for your seatbelt buckle? It's not a fun game. In fact, it's one drivers get so tired playing that they sometimes lose patience and say 'the heck with it'. As we all know, not wearing your seatbelt can prove deadly in the event of an accident. To help enhance driver safety, Mercedes-Benz has developed active seatbelt buckles.

As the name suggests, the buckles are active, emerging from the car's upholstery when the rear doors are opened. How is this possible? Mercedes-Benz has engineered the seatbelt buckles using  small electric motors. The motors raise the buckle up by roughly two-and-a-half inches. Another feature of Mercedes-Benz active seatbelt buckles are their illuminated slots designed to eliminate fumbling in the dark.

Usability is, however, just one of the benefits Mercedes-Benz active seatbelt buckles promise to bring future owners.  Integrated with Mercedes-Benz PRE-SAFE preventative safety system, the buckles are also complete with reverse belt tensioning of up to three-point-one inches when vehicles sense a potential accident.

Thinking even further outside of box, Mercedes-Benz is examining ways to make unbuckling easier as well.  Ultimately, their goal is to create a system which allows crash victims to be freed from their belts and the vehicle as quickly and efficiently as possible.

When can you and your family adopt a new Mercedes-Benz outfitted with active seatbelt buckles?  The automaker says, soon. In the meantime, you can drive with confidence knowing that a pyrotechnic belt tensioning system has been a standard feature in Mercedes-Benz models for years.
